How Many Wax Melts From 1kg?

Work out how many melts a batch makes, or how much wax to buy for an order.

Enter your wax, fragrance load and mould size to see how many melts you'll get, including the fragrance oil and a little for wastage. Switch modes to work backwards from an order and see how much wax to buy.

How the count works

Fragrance oil is added on top of the wax, so it adds to what you pour. 1kg of wax at 8% load gives 1,080 g of melted wax. Some of that never reaches a mould: it stays in the jug, drips off the spout or goes into topping up sinkholes, so the calculator takes off a wastage allowance, 5% by default. What's left is divided by the weight of one filled mould, and anything that doesn't fill a whole mould is shown as left over.

The mould presets are typical figures, but clamshells and snap bars vary between suppliers, so weigh one of yours. Put the empty mould on digital scales, zero them, fill it to your usual level and read the weight. If you fill it with water, take off about 10%, because wax is lighter than water.

Frequently asked questions

How many wax melts do you get from 1kg of wax?

About 13 clamshells at 75 g each, once you add 8% fragrance oil and allow 5% for spills and top-ups. Smaller single shapes at around 15 g give about 68 melts. The exact number depends on your moulds, so weigh one filled mould and use that figure.

Does fragrance oil add to the number of melts?

Yes. Fragrance oil is added on top of the wax, so 1kg of wax at 8% load gives 1,080 g of melted wax to pour. That is roughly one extra clamshell per kilo.

How do I find the fill weight of my mould?

Put the empty clamshell or mould on digital scales, zero them, fill it to your usual level with water or wax and read the weight. Water is slightly heavier than wax, so if you use water, take off about 10% to get the wax weight.

How much wastage should I allow?

Around 5% covers wax left in the jug, spills and topping up sinkholes. Use more for your first few batches or for moulds with lots of small cavities, and less once your process is consistent.
