Use this checklist when you design a label, add a new scent or change your fragrance load. It covers what has to be on a CLP label in Great Britain, the documents behind it, and the extra rules if you post to Northern Ireland or the EU. Your ticks are saved in this browser.
This is a checklist, not legal advice. What your label must say depends on your exact fragrance oil and load, and that information comes from your fragrance supplier. If you're unsure, ask your local Trading Standards service or see Business Companion's guidance on candles and similar products. For the background, read our CLP & compliance guide.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I need a CLP label on wax melts if I only sell at craft fairs?
Yes. CLP applies whenever you supply a hazardous mixture to the public, whether that's online, at a fair or to friends for money. Scented wax melts usually need at least an allergen statement, and often pictograms and hazard statements, depending on the fragrance oil and how much you use.
- Do I need a UFI code on wax melt labels in the UK?
Not in Great Britain. GOV.UK guidance says there is no obligation to generate a UFI for the GB market. Northern Ireland follows EU CLP, so if you sell hazardous wax melts to customers there, a UFI on the label and a poison centre notification are required, as they are for EU customers.
- Where do I get the hazard statements for my label?
From your fragrance supplier. Most UK suppliers publish CLP information for each oil at common loads, such as 10%, or give you the Safety Data Sheet so the classification can be calculated. Use the information for the load you actually use. If it is only given for a higher load, that is the cautious choice; never use figures for a lower load than yours.
- Does my label need a phone number?
Yes. A CLP label must give the supplier's name, address and telephone number. It is one of the most commonly missed items on handmade wax melt labels.
